land rover
Land Rover will show off the new Range_e diesel-electric hybrid prototype for the first time at the 2011 Geneva motor show.
Haven't we seen the hybrid Range_e before?

Yes and no. CAR readers may be familiar with this modified Range Rover Sport, which was reported here in May 2010. However, this is the first time we've seen a working prototype of the Range_e in public; it presages a production hybrid due in 2013.

By mating Land Rover’s existing TDV6 diesel engine and upcoming ZF eight-speed automatic transmission with a plug-in parallel hybrid drive module, the Range_e boasts a most un-Land Rover-like CO2 rating of  89g/km. For comparison, a regular Range Sport TDV6 musters 243g/km of CO2, while the petrol-electric Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid manages 193g/km.

A pure EV mode in the Range_e offers a claimed 20 miles of zero-emissions motoring at speeds up to 70mph, allowing mums a quieter school-run and providing a handy rationalisation to use against eco-zealous guests at dinner parties. Top speed of the Range_e is 120mph, and Land Rover claim a rather rangey 690 miles between refuelling stops for the diesel-electric prototype.
Anything else new on the Land Rover stand at Geneva?

Displayed alongside the Range_e will be the exclusive Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition, also making its public debut at Geneva. As reported the other day, it's a run-out special, bristling with extra kit and even a pair of iPads built into the front seat back rests.

Land Rover will also show off Range Rover Evoque in both three-door 'coupe' and five-door forms, along with further information on the new soft-roader's extensive range of accessory option packages and pricing for Europe (but not the UK).

And finally... the Discovery 4 'Landmark' Limited Editions round off the Land Rover presence at Geneva 2011

The new Land Rover Range_e diesel-electric plug-in prototype that was first teased back in May, 2010, will make its motor show debut at next month's Geneva Salon. The Range_e is said to be one of several working prototypes currently being developed at Land Rover's design and engineering centre in the UK. It is based on the Range Rover Sport model and features a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged diesel engine with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission mated to an, as-of-yet unspecified, electric motor and battery pack.

The British automaker said the all-wheel drive prototype can run purely on electricity for up to a distance of 20 miles or approximately 32 kilometers and emits as low as 89g/km of CO2. The Range_e also has a top speed of 120 mph or 193 km/h and a combined driving range of 690 miles or 1,110 kilometers.

The Range_e will be joined at Land Rover's Geneva Motor Show stand by two new Limited Editions, the Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate and the 2011 Discovery 4 'Landmark' with Black and White themes.

Land Rover added that it will also be announcing full European pricing (excluding UK) for the new Range Rover Evoque in both 3- and 5-door forms, and will also showing a comprehensive range of accessories and options for the vehicle.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director said: "Customers like to make their own unique statement with a vehicle and we have provided individuals with lots of opportunity to personalise their new Range Rover Evoque, whilst maintaining the essence of the design."

At next month's Geneva Salon, Land Rover will display the new Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition, which is claimed be the firm’s most luxurious model ever.

The highlight of the limited edition model are the two stand-alone rear seats, which are clad in specially selected natural leather and separated by an additional console incorporating an aluminum laptop table and refrigerator. Two Apple iPads, strapped to the front seat headrests, provide the high-tech touch.

The opulence continues in the boot where designers used a teak floor with metal and leather accents. The rest of the interior is dressed in different, but equally exquisite materials, such as the Oxford leather found on the door panels, dashboard and steering wheel, complemented by Kalahari wood veneers.

Available in two unique colors, Roussillon Red and Otago Stone, the Autobiography Ultimate Edition model comes with body-colored door handles, dark atlas radiator grille and side vents. Optional side steps and 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels round up the exterior appointments. Clients from selected markets will be able to specify their cars with the classic Santorini Black paintjob as well.

Power comes from either a 4.4-liter LR-TDV8 diesel or a 5.0-liter LR-V8 supercharged gasoline engine. The oil-burner churns out 313HP and an asphalt-shredding 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. It can propel the heavyweight SUV from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.5 seconds while consuming 9.39 lt/100 km (25.1 US mph) on the combined cycle.

The gasoline engine is capable of 510HP and 625 Nm (461 lb-ft), allowing the Range Rover to complete the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in just 5.9 seconds.

Both engines are coupled to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via Range Rover’s sophisticated Terrain Response system, complete with Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control.

A total of 500 Ultimate Edition models will be built, with prices to be announced individually for the 20+ markets that will receive the exclusive Range Rover later this year.

Upcoming Cars 2011 Land Rover Wallpaper and Specification
Although Land Rover is now the sole property of Tata Motors, it looks as though that all projects started under Ford’s leadership are still moving full speed ahead. Spy photographer recently spotted an updated version of the company’s Range Rover Sport while out testing and now comes word that Land Rover will expand its upcoming LRX range.

Shown in concept form as a three-door model, Autocar.co.uk is reporting that both three and five-door versions of the LRX will make production.
Part of the allure of the LRX concept was its sleek shape, and Land Rover designers are said to be working hard to make sure the five-door version doesn’t lose anything in translation.

2013 Land Rover Range e Front Side View 2013 Land Rover Range e
The Range Rover Sport hybrid prototype shown here is named Range_e. The Land Rover Range_e is powered the diesel-electric hybrid power/drive. Land Rover will be putting its first dedicated hybrid model into production in 2013. If successful, expect a plug-in circa 2015 that would return 20 miles or about 32 kilometers of city driving under electric power.

Now, Land Rover is focus on Range_e to diesel-electric setup. Transmission duties for the Range_e will be handled by a ZF 8-Speed automatic, while extensive use of aluminum and other lightweight materials should help keep all upcoming Rovers’ weight issues in check.
But engineers say that a gasoline hybrid is also under developed. After all, we here in the States don’t get diesel Rovers (for the life of me I don’t know why).

Inspired from the Range Rover Sport RS600 by Kahn, the Land Rover Freelander RS200 receives an extensive cosmetic makeover by Project Kahn. For the price, the tuning firm said that the Freelander RS200 is available as a completed model for £26,995 (about US$39,300 or €32,300) which includes £10,000 worth of Project Kahn accessories.

Land Rover Freelander RS200 experienced some modifications on the outside, a matt black signature bonnet stripe, silver door handles, door mirror caps and front bumper vents, as well as body colored style vents, side sills and front grille surround, and smoked side repeaters. It made much more aggressive thanks to the huge 20-inch alloy wheels that are wrapped in beefier rubber.
While modifications in, the Freelander’s interior with black quilted leather seats while contrasting white seams are found on the doors, seats and the steering wheel. The red and white counters on the instrument panel round off the interior changes.
